MFS:  Marathon Filling Station

Marathon Filling Station Newspaper Articles on the Town of Daleville Scrapbook Page:  TOD-021 to TOD-026

Top of Page

Page Information-
This Scrapbook contains 45, 3-ring plastic sleeve pages, open at the top, which contains Newspaper articles, original receipts and documents relating to the Marathon Filling Station which was built in 1937.  The scrapbook was created by Betty Jean Davis Musick (1925-2002) about 1998.  S1013
I have scanned the contents of each sleeve and given them file names to represent the sleeve number in order of placement in the scrapbook and to also indicate the number of the item in that sleeve.
The File names are constructed in the following manner:
-  MFS-001A, MFS-001B, MFS-001C, etc.
   -  MFS = Marathon Filling Station
   -  001 = Sleeve number
   -  A, B, C, etc. = the item number within the sleeve

I am using the same file naming method whether the item is a document or a photo

There are some modern images at the bottom of this page which use the "I" file name - I used this designation to separate those images from those contained in the original scrapbook (See:  Station Photos )
The Index and Timeline will help to sort out the material as to type, date, names, etc.

Filling Station
January 12, 1998
This little filling station was built and owned by Martin Davis in the last months of 1937.  It was located at the corner of St. Rd. 67 and Walnut St. in Daleville, Indiana.  It was first a Linco Station, they then changed their name to Marathon.
The building was built by Ed Spangler and Joe Hodson.
It was managed by Alva Betterton.  He hired Walter Richman and later Vet Gustin to run it.
In 1967 Raymond "Mick" Gross ran the business.  He ran it for 21 years, until Dec 20, 1988.  He was robbed one time and the robber also shot the telephone.  It was also hit several times by cars and was moved 43 inches on the foundation.  A dump truck hit the old out house and tore it down.
After Mick closed it out on Dec. 20, 1988, it was rented to a man who sold leather goods.  He's the one who painted it that horrible yellow color.
On Sept. 7, 1996 it was moved from St. R. 67 to Uptown Daleville where it is now being restored to its original Marathon colors of red, white and blue.

B:  Black & White Aerial Photo of station, nd (Circa 1940s) - shows the out house (Federal Toilet) and the Davis Apple Orchard behind it.  The Marathon Sign is located at the left of the image. Location:  NW corner of St. Rd. 67 and Walnut Street
