Dictionary Definitions
Army
Second largest unit consisting of 2 or more corps
Division
Major administrative and tactical unit – larger than a regiment or brigade and smaller than a corps – usually commanded by a Major-General
Battalion
A ground force unit composed of a headquarters and 2 or more companies or similar units
Platoon
Military unit consisting of 2 or more squads or sections and a headquarters
Brigade
Consisting several regiments, squadrons, groups, or battalions
Regiment
Unit of ground forces, consists of 2 or more battalions or battle groups, a headquarters unit and certain supporting units
Company
A subdivision of a regiment battle group, or battalion – Any relatively small group of soldiers –
US Army: a basic unit with both tactical and administrative functions.
Squad
A small number of soldiers – commonly 10 men led usually by a sergeant – The smallest military unit.
Corps
A military unit of ground combat forces consisting of 2 or more divisions and other troops
Squadron
An armored cavalry or cavalry unit consisting of 2 or more troops, a headquarters and various supporting units
