Crossroads School:  School #10  [S9] - [S14, page 30 at top] -
- Willard VanMatre - first driver of school bus in Salem Township - transported pupils  from Mt.  Healthy (??) to Cross Roads.  He received $1.22 per day.  [S11]

- Consolidation: "The Cross Roads school (No. 10) was already graded, having been made so in 1981, had two teachers and a two-room building.  IN 1900 the seven pupls in district No. 11 were hauled to Cross Roads and distributed among the grades, the most distant pupil living not more than five miles.  This accession to Cross Roads did not necessitate another teacher nor did it increase to an appreciable extent the burden of instruction or extension of facilities in the school; yet the advantages accruing to the No. 10 pupils from the consolidation were all that the advocates of the new system had claimed."  [S11, p 251, 252]

"The 'Cross Roads' had, by that time, [1838] become a locality of some note, and had been made the voting precinct of the township."  [S6 page 285] -
"In later years, planners wanted to locate a Tri City airport at the site but the idea never went past the planning stage."  [S7]
"About the year 1838, however, William and Erasmus Moffett opened a stock of goods at the same corner.  The 'Cross Roads' had, by that time, become a locality of some note, and had been made the voting precinct of the township.  The Moffet store was supplied with a much better tock, adn was more extensively patronized than its predecessor.  They continued the business here for several ears, and finally closed out the stock."  [S6, p 285]

[Our Neighborhood, by Larry Shores - Muncie Star 12 Nov 1993] - Doc2675.pdf
"Crossroads, near the south line of the township, had some commercial distinction in early years, a store having been opened there about 1832, though it failed of success, and in 1838 the Moffett brothers opened another."  [S15, p 102]
