"In the early thirties [1830s] what was known as 'the hydraulic' was begun by the state at this point.  This was intended as a feeder to the Wabash canal.  A dam ten feet high was constructed across the rive at this point, and  some of the stones and timbers were to be seen in the bed of the river as late as ten years ago.  The canal was cut on the north bank of the river, extending along low hills in many places nearly a mile from the river.  At the head of this canal. on the opposite side of the river from where Daleville now stands, a town said to have had two or three hundred inhabitants and known as Mount summit grew up.  The canal enterprise failed, however, and the village disintegrated.  Some of the old buildings stood for over half a century, but the owner of the land, John Bronnenberg, had long since plowed across the streets that had been laid out when tht village was started."  [S2, p 98]

Summits Port was established to be a port on canal between Daleville and Anderson - When the water was let into the canal, it was all lost before it reached Anderson and the venture was lost.  [S4] - [S9, pdf page 7] - [S11] -
Mill Race ?? - An interesting feature just east of the intersection of CR400S and CR900W - CR400S tees into CR900W at this point - [S6] - [S7] -
- Could this have been the site for Summitsport instead of where I have placed it?  Or, could it have something to do with Summitsport?
Delinquent Taxes List:  "The following names were published on pages one, two and three of the Indiana Signal on 13 Dec 1848 with the heading: 'A LIST OF LANDS & LOTS in Delaware County, Returned Delinquent for non-payment of Taxes Thereon for the Year 1847.'  The owners' names, number of acres, township, exact location of land, amount of taxes owed and other information were published.  Some Landowners held land in more than one township.  Joseph Anthony was the county auditor.  He gave notice that the lands and lots would be sold at public auction to pay for the taxes, interest and penalties owed.  The sale would be held on the first Monday, being the first day of January 1849.  Those not sold would be forfeited to the state."

Extract:
"On January 10, 1827 Campbell Dale purchased on half of section 12 from the U.S. Government, including the northeast quarter (three fourths of which is now within the corporate limits of Daleville) The east half of the southeast quarter and the east half of the northwest quarter.
This act established the present site for Daleville and about this same time an attempt was made to establish a village or a port of trade by damming White River and feeding a canal.
The Anderson Hydraulic Company undertook the building of this canal which followed White River and was to furnish transportation for intake and outlet of tradeable goods.  The name for the prospective town was Summits Port and is said to have been located on the river near the Roy Schlegel, Henry Bronnenberg or John Bronnenberg farms.
Few buildings went up however, for when the water was turned in, it was all lost before it reached Anderson and the canal venture was lost.  Many of us have had lots of fun picnicking and fishing on the banks of White River, and our sons have learned to swim 'down at the ole dam.' "

Dale's grave site located at, 8110 Sorghum St., erected by Mrs. Ed Huffman
