Some Comments from Mike, ID0452:  Email of 19 Jan 2013

Just for the record, Caroline Whetstone also spoke German, specifically Pennsy-Deitsch and it was probably her "birth" language. Mother Said that August and Caroline frequently spoke German together which angered Mabel because she thought they were talking about her and didn't want her to know what they were saying.
Until I was 8 or 10 years old I thought that the Haas's came from Holland. Mother corrected me but I remember August saying that he spoke "Dutch". Even then I knew about wooden shoes, windmills, etc. and assumed he meant Holland.

Regarding the time I sat on August's lap and played with his knife and watch chain: About a year ago I was visiting my Amish friends to get milk, bread, etc. The women were in the process of cutting a hog backbone into chops. Their meatsaw was very dull and they were having a hard time, so I started helping them. One of the girls (28 years old) referred to the saw as "stoomp". Suddenly, 68 years melted away and I recalled August saying that if I got my own knife it would have to be "stoomp", which means dull. I vaguely remember him saying other words to me I didn't understand. I think he may have been introducing me to his other language, but I' m not 100% sure about that. I do know he never spoke in German to Mother or taught her any words, although I'm certain he was fluent. German may have actually been his birth language. Again, I think Mabel's aversion to German was the reason for this.

Had he lived a normal lifespan, you and I may have learned a little Pennsy-Deitch along the way!

Heinrich Obituary: "He leaves a wife 4 sons and one daughter a stepson . . ."
Hannah Obituary:  "she leaves a father, mother, five brothers, one sister . . ."(6)

Heinrich was 28 and Caroline 25 when they married in 1874. It is quite conceivable that either or both of them could have been married previously.

It is also quite possible that Caroline had this son out of wedlock.

Possible previous marriage for Caroline 12 Dec 1867 (The age is about right - she would have been 18 at the time)
-  Marriage Record
(4), (5)S35,
-  1870 Census:  S36,
-  Caroline is shown in the 1870 Census living with her parents
(2)

From the way it sounds in the obituaries above the stepson must have been a son of Caroline
   -  1900 Census:  She had 10 children and 7 are living(3)   (She only had 9 with Heinrich)  S8,
       -  The following children of Heinrich/Caroline were living in 1900:  Frank, Elizabeth, Hannah, John, Valentine and August
       - So that leaves one child unaccounted for
   -  1910 Census:  She had 9 children and 5 are living
(3)  S24,
       - The following children of Heinrich/Caroline were living in 1910:  Frank, Elizabeth, John, Valentine and August

There is 9 yr. old boy, William F. Krouse, living on or near the John Whetstone household in 1880.  I always thought this was John William Krauss, ID2042, the son of John George Krauss, ID2041 and Elizabeth Whetstone Krauss, ID0477.   This boy would be about the right age for him to have been a son of Caroline instead.
----------------------------------------------

(1)  Thanks Mike, ID0452!!  I had somehow overlooked the stepson reference in Heinrich's obituary and the reference to the number of siblings in Hannah's obituary, but Mike saw it and made the connection.
(2)  There are many cases of people being shown in 2 or more different locations and households in the census
(3)  The information in a census record can vary due to who gave the information to the enumerator - 1900 may have been Caroline and 1910 may have been someone else, maybe not even a family member.
(4)  I did a search for "Caroline Whetstone" in the Ohio Marriages on FamilySearch and located this record.  Things fit.
(5)  I located an 1860 Census record for the possible husband of Caroline
(6)  The children of Heinrich/Caroline living in 1904 were:  Frank, John, Valentine, August and Elizabeth - leaving one son unaccounted for
(7)  I only offer the information above as a possibility - Much further research needs to be conducted

Hermannshohle (Hermann's Cave) - by the reservoir in Niederhausen
At this time one is trying to preserve this historically valuable building for future generations. In old times, before the erection of the Luitpold-bridge, this house served as a ferry station, where the vehicles (vessels) crossed the Nahe river between Bad Kreuznac and the area around Meisenheim on their trade routes. This is proven, among other things, by a certificate of operations * "Nahe-ferry Oberhausen" in the year 1779, which was granted to Johann Peter Haas by Carl Theodore Lord of Pfalz near Rhein.
This picture was taken on April 19, 1961. (Notes from Wilma: *sort of a franchise to run the ferry granted by the local count or baron. Your g. grandfather Henry Haas was born here.)

S20 Obituary:  Caroline Whetstone Haas, ID0385, Newspaper Unknown, probably an Ohio paper, Jan 1928. Acc000673/ Doc1588.pdf

Extract:
OBITUARY. Caroline Whetstone Haas was born Sept. 8th, 1851, in Crawford county Ohio, and departed this life Jan. 21, 1928, in Muncie, Ind., aged 76 years, 4 months and 13 days. From Crawford county she came with her parents to Williams county. In the year 1873 she was united in marriage to Henry Haas who has preceded her in death 23 years. To this union were born nine children, 5 of whom have preceded her to the Great beyond. She leaves to mourn their loss 4 sons, Frank of Hartford City, Ind, John and August of Muncie, Ind and Valentine of Stryker. Fourteen grand children and two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She was one of a family of 14 children, all girls, of which four sisters remain. In later years she has made her home in Muncie, Ind. Although like most of the older generation she did not have the advantage of an education, but was always fond of reading her Bible, and in her last hours said to her son how she loved church. She was a great worker and always glad if anybody had some work for her, just so her hands were kept busy. Rest dear hands, thy work is o'er. Rest in peace and toll no more. Card of Thanks. We wish to thank all who assisted in any way during the burial of our mother, to the minister and singers also do we extend our thanks. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haas, Mr. and Mrs. John Haas, Mr. and Mrs. August Haas, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Haas and families.

(1)  Thanks to ID0452 for pointing out to me the wording at the bottom of this print.
(2)  This headstone is located in Lot 527 of the IOOF/ Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana Cemetery.  It is acknowledged that it was carved by August Haas (The daughters agreed that he had carved it).  What is not certain is just who the stone was originally carved for.  It was always assumed it was for Mattie Klinger Worthen since it is in her burial plot.  Grandson of August, ID0452, remembers seeing this stone at the E. 17th St. house when he was a young boy and thought that someone was buried there.  Now it is in the IOOF Cemetery.  When it was moved and by whom is a mystery.  Is it possible that August actually carved this stone for HIS mother, Caroline Whetstone Haas,  who died in 1928?  This makes a lot more sense because August would not have known Mattie since she died in 1910 before he had met Mabel.
